A GRASP for graph planarization

چکیده
A greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) is a metaheuristic for combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we describe a GRASP for the graph planarization problem, extending the heuristic of Goldschmidt and Takvorian [Networks, v. 24, pp. 69–73, 1994]. We review basic concepts of GRASP: construction and local search algorithms. The implementation of GRASP for graph planarization is described in detail. Computational experience on a large set of standard test problems is presented. On almost all test problems considered, the new heuristic either matches or finds a better solution than previously described graph planarization heuristics. In several cases, previously unknown optimal solutions are found.

An Approach for Mixed Upward Planarization
In this paper, we consider the problem of finding a mixed upward planarization of a mixed graph, i.e., a graph with directed and undirected edges. The problem is a generalization of the planarization problem for undirected graphs and is motivated by several applications in graph drawing. We present a heuristic approach for this problem which provides good quality and reasonable running time in ...
متن کاملTwo-Layer Planarization: Improving on Parameterized Algorithmics
A bipartite graph is biplanar if the vertices can be placed on two parallel lines in the plane such that there are no edge crossings when edges are drawn as straight-line segments connecting vertices on one line to vertices on the other line. We study two problems: • 2-Layer Planarization: can k edges be deleted from a given graph G so that the remaining graph is biplanar? • 1-Layer Planarizati...

A bipartite graph is biplanar if the vertices can be placed on two parallel lines (layers) in the plane such that there are no edge crossings when edges are drawn straight. The 2-Layer Planarization problem asks if k edges can be deleted from a given graph G so that the remaining graph is biplanar. This problem is NP-complete, as is the 1Layer Planarization problem in which the permutation of t...
متن کاملThe Effect of Planarization on Width
We study the effects of planarization (the construction of a planar diagram D from a non-planar graph G by replacing each crossing by a new vertex) on graph width parameters. We show that for treewidth, pathwidth, branchwidth, clique-width, and tree-depth there exists a family of n-vertex graphs with bounded parameter value, all of whose planarizations have parameter value Ω(n). However, for ba...
